The State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) on Tuesday claimed to have seized 5-kg heroin smuggled from Pakistan by arresting one person, identified as Palwinder Singh, on the Lopoke-Chogawan road in this district. Addressing a press conference here, assistant inspector general (AIG) Manmohan Singh said, "As part of the ongoing state-level concerted drive against drug trafficking, we arrested a person named Palwinder Singh alias Bhinda who was carrying 5-kg heroin. Following a tip-off, the accused was nabbed from a canal bridge on the Lopoke-Chogawan road. However, his associate Gurjit Singh managed to escape on his motorcycle."

He said, "The preliminary questioning of Palwinder Singh has revealed that he was in touch with Pakistan-based heroin smuggler Abad Ali and some notorious Indian smugglers also".

The consignment of heroin smuggled from Pakistan was retrieved by the accused and his associates from the Indo-Pakistan border in Amritsar sector, added the police officer.

The AIG stressed that more revelations are likely to come after thorough questioning of the accused.

"The exact place from where the consignment was pushed into Indian territory is being identified. More arrests are likely. Further investigations are going on," he added.

He said it is the endeavour of the Punjab Police to bust such trafficking rackets completely by unravelling their complete network and nexus.
