Senior Akali leaders from Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency on Saturday mounted an offensive against  Congress candidate and former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh, questioning his public accountability.

Citing Captain's tenure as CM from 2002 to 2007, they said that Captain was not available even to his ministers, MLAs and workers of his own party, leave aside the common people.

"Now what is it that inspires him to ask for votes from the people of Amritsar?"  asked a joint statement issued by revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia, animal husbandry minister Gulzar Singh Ranike, chief parliamentary secretary Inderbir Singh Bolaria, senior Aikali leader Vir Singh Lopoke and district president Upkar Singh Sandhu.

They said that Captain had publically stated that he was from outside Amritsar and thus will not be able to do justice to the people before he was fielded by the party.

"What has happened overnight that he has become sympathiser of the people?" asked the Akali leaders.

They said nothing is expected from Captain and he can only "cheat" the people of the constituency as he will not be available to them and will spend time in luxury hotels and resorts. "He had already been rejected by the people of the state as a leader," they added.

They said that 'reluctant' Captain  was not even ready to contest the elections but he was forced do so by his Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Majithia questions Amrinder's candidature

The statement by Akali leaders separately puts the views of  revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia on Congress candidate
from Amritsar Lok Sabha seat Captain Amarinder Singh:

--Amarinder had stated publicly that he was not interested in  contesting the Lok Sabha elections. Later to save his political career, after being threatened by Sonia, he is contesting the polls half-heartedly. The people are not fools that he would be able to misguide them now.

--Captain's performance, during his tenure as CM, was dismal. After the elections are over, the Congress workers would have no idea where to find him.

--Amarinder should answer why he ignored the Amritsar region throughout and diverted his attention to his own areas in the state. During his tenure as CM, Amritsar was one of the most neglected cities in the state, despite being 'Guru ki Nagri'.
