The state special (police) operation cell (SSOC), Amritsar, on Thursday claimed to have arrested another accused wanted in the advocate Vineet Mahajan assault case and allegedly seized 40 gm heroin from the car he was travelling in on Wednesday night.

With the arrest of Shammi Randhawa, alias, Lalli, the number of arrests in the case rose to eight.

SSOC sleuths intercepted Randhawa’s Verna car here late on Wednesday night and arrested him allegedly with the heroin. The car was among the three vehicles used by the accused in the attack on the advocate.

ASSOC release here on Thursday stated that the arrest and recovery of heroin was made in presence of a gazetted of ficer and a public witness, apart from other witnesses.

Advocate Vineet Mahajan and his brother Avneesh were assaulted on May 10, following which a case under sections 326/23/24/427/341/148/149/120-B of the IPC was registered at the Civil Lines police station.

Randhawa, a resident of Sanjay Gandhi Colony, was also named in the FIR; however, with the recovery of heroin, the SSOC on Thursday added sections 21, 25, 29, 61 and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) Act against him at the SSOC police station here.

Initially, nine persons were named in the FIR, but after investigations and interrogation of the ar rested accused two more names were added to it. The two names have not been disclosed by the cops.

The case is being investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed after the directions of the Punjab and Haryana high court. The team led IGP Gaurav Yadav visited the city on Tuesday to collect some vital documents related to the case.

MURDER BID CASE AGAINST GORSI, RISHI
The SIT has also been investigating an attempt to murder case registered against advocate Sandeep Gorsi and Congress councillor Gurinder Singh Rishi on May 9.

Gorsi had alleged that the case was “fabricated at the behest of local bodies minister Anil Joshi”. Mahajan too has blamed Joshi for being behind the assault that left him and his brother injured.

Mahajan in his statement claimed to have recognised BJP councillor PS Ratoul, who is a close Joshi aide. Ratoul who is also named in the FIR is still on the run.

During their visit here, the SIT had taken custody of the arrested accused lodged at the Civil Lines police station and shifted them to the SSOC’s joint interrogation centre (JIC), where they were subjected to intensify questioning.

The two advocates in their statements to SIT alleged SHO Mahajan of being in Joshi’s league.

Police sources here confirmed that SIT had submitted its status report on the two cases to the high court on Wednesday, a day ahead of the last date fixed by the court.

The high court, which had earlier ordered the state police to provide security to the two advocates, on Thursday specified that three armed police guards be provided to each of the two advocates.
