There's hope of respite from the ever-growing heaps of garbage in the holy city, as the municipal corporation has floated a tender finally for the solid-waste management project.

On Tuesday, after many deadlines since September 23, it invited bids for the contract worth `72 crore. Proposed by local parliamentarian Navjot Singh Sidhu in 2007, the project was stalled last year after Antony Waste Management Cell pulled out. It will involve door-to-door collection of garbage, at 650 tonnes a day, from Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Jandiala and Patti.

A waste-management plant is proposed at Bhagtanwala. Since the discontinuation of door-to-door collection last year, the MC had returned to the traditional method of collecting garbage.

After approving the project, the Punjab and Haryana high court has given the MC six months to hire a company to run it. On September 14, following an exposé of Sidhu's failed projects that had not moved beyond the laying of foundation stone, municipal commissioner DPS Kharbanda had issued a statement that the tenders for the waste-management project would be floated on September 23.

The date moved to October 3, 7, 10, 12, and then 15. Local bodies minister Anil Joshi said there were discrepancies to be removed first. "We have given our written consent to the floating of tenders," said municipal commissioner Kharbanda.
