Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Partap Singh Bajwa has condemned an alleged attempt to kidnap former state DG (prisons) Shashi Kant from his residence at Chandigarh.

Reacting to the incident, Bajwa told mediapersons here on Friday, "It shows the extent to which the SAD-BJP government can go to silence the voice of reason and truth. Shashi Kant was targeted as he has time and again claimed that the state's top political leaders of the ruling party (SAD) were involved in the drug racket in Punjab and he had threatened to name them."

The PPCC chief claimed that the 'attack' was either to eliminate the former DG or to scare him off, so that he does not make public the names of high-ups involved in the drug racket. Another motive could have been to kidnap the former DG and then implicate him in a fabricated case, he added.

He pointed out that the 'attack' shows that 'jungle raj' prevails in Punjab and there is no law and order. If a former DG is not safe, then no one is safe, he added.

"The Punjab Police have become an extension counter of the government. The Akalis use the cops in which ever manner they like, including for giving a clean chit to Bikram Majithia even without a proper probe," he claimed.

Bajwa said his sympathies and that of the Congress were with Shashi Kant and his family. He was all praise for the former cop for the bold step he has taken in the fight against the drug mafia.
