With an aim to make the girls of border villages tough and confident enough to deal with any situation, the Border Security Force (BSF) has launched a special initiative to train them for self-defence.

The BSF, which has chalked out a detailed plan to give 'unarmed combat training for self-defence to girls', has adopted 20 schools in the border areas for this purpose.

The programme was inaugurated on Monday with the commencement of a training session at the government school at Attari.

As BSF deputy inspector general (DIG) MF Farooqui inaugurated the session at the Attari school, the girls showed tremendous enthusiasm and were seen keen to learn the combat lessons.

Talking to HT, Farooqui said, "It is a special programme of the BSF to train the girls of the border areas for their self-defence. It is very important to tackle crime against women and also make them feel confident. Today, we started with a group of about 50 girls and they will get training till August 14."
The BSF official claimed that special trainers have been put on the job and the woman constables of the force have also been involved to give a fillip to this programme.

To a question, the DIG said, "Earlier, we had conducted a de-addiction drive, but this is our first attempt to empower the girls of the border areas. The idea behind this drive is to give a tremendous boost to the confidence of girls. Moreover, as the BSF is deployed along the border, it is our duty to boost the morale of the area residents."

He further said, "We are also open to train the boys who are interested. Apart from this unarmed combat training programme, we will also guide the youth for the career opportunities ahead".
