The Border Security Force (BSF) has handed over specially-designed shoes to its jawans, who put in tremendous effort every evening during the high-voltage Retreat ceremony at Attari border to outshine Pakistani Rangers through heavy foot stomping, to save them from the usual jerks and pain.

The BSF jawans, who participate in the retreat ceremony at the Attar-Wagah joint check post, have been coming up with regular complaints of joint pains, back ache and stiff ankles. As every jawan who participates in the ceremony lands his feet very heavily on the concrete track, the regular routine has brought health concerns for them.

The BSF authorities, concerned over the health of its jawans, had long deliberations over the issue and finally got made special shoes with extra cushion.

The jawans, who were handed over these shoes a couple of days ago, claim that they are now feeling far less pressure and jerks on their joints during the ceremony.

Talking to HT, BSF DIG MF Farooqui, who had called various jawans to get the feedback and also suggest fresh modifications, said, “After the regular complaints of the jawans, the BSF had planned many things, including rubber track or track with wooden planks under it. But since these plans had some or the other hitch, we got made special shoes and these were given to 15 jawans on an experiment basis. I have talked to the jawans and they are feeling comfortable with new shoes and their jerk level has also come down”. He said, “There are two kinds of shoes we have got made for the Retreat ceremony. One is with a strong cushion inside and the other has a strong cushion under the shoe. The jawans are comfortable after various drills and suggested certain modifications. Now we will further strengthen the cushion inside the shoes and also work on feedbacks in coming days. But overall the idea has worked very well till now”.

The DIG further said, “There will be certain alterations made. Actually during the ceremony, each jawan makes his full effort and their feet land on the concrete very heavily. This brings not only applause from the public but also certain pains for jawans”.

The BSF authorities, he said, sent the existing shoes to a factory and got made the special shoes. “Now after the required modifications, 70 more new shoes will be ordered and given to other jawans as well”, he added.

Talking to HT, BSF jawan Anupam Yadav said, “I have been wearing the new shoes for the past couple of days and I am feeling the difference. A good cushion has been added inside the shoe. Earlier, there was pain when we landed our foot but that has reduced now. I have requested that the cushion inside the shoe be further strengthened”.

Another jawan, Sunil Tyagi, who is wearing the new shoes with extra cushion on the bottom, said, “It is far better than earlier. The new shoe is helping and we feel that few more modifications can make the shoes perfect”.
