The Congress on Wednesday staged a dharna outside the police station at Bhindi Saida village in the Raja Sansi assembly segment in protest against registaration of a 'false case' against village sarpanch.
The protesters, led by Raja Sansi MLA Sukhbinder Singh Sukh Sarkaria, deamanded withdrawal of the 'fabricated' case against sarpanch Satta Singh, a Congress supporter, for allegedly beating up a person.
The case was registered under sections 323 and 324 of IPC on May 8.
The protesters, which included a number of women from the village, shouted slogans against the SAD-BJP government and the police. They alleged that the case was registered at the behest of Dalip Singh alias Bhambira, the former village sarpanch and a Akali supporter, who had the backing of former Akali MLA Veer Singh Lopoke.
"Bhambira was defeated by Satta Singh in the last panchayat polls and he has been planning for quite sometime to take revenge on Satta Singh", claimed Sarkaria while addressing the gathering outside the police station.
The Congress MLA alleged that Bhambira conspired with the police to have the sarpanch booked on charges of beating up one Surjit Singh. The reality was that the victim was beaten up by the family members of a woman of a neighbouring village with whom he had illicit relations, he claimed.
He gave a one-week deadline to the police to withdraw the case or else his party workers would stage a dharna outside the office of the Amritsar rural SSP. Others who took part in the protest included MLA OP Soni, Tarsem Singh DC, Lalli Majithia, Karamjit Singh Rintu and Ashwani Pappu.
COMPLAINANT'S SHADY PAST
Notably, Bhambira has a number of cases pending against him and had even spent some time in jail last year.
The Left wing parties have organised a number of protests against him in the past two years and accused him of indulging in corruption and pocketing developmental grants as well as funds related to old age and widow pensions. In this context, they have even submitted 'evidence' to the district administration but they alleged that Bhambira is being shielded by some Akali leaders of the area.
DSP Jagat Preet Singh, who was present at the police station, said that they had registered a case as they had received a written complaint against the sarpanch. He said that the matter is under investigation and if the sarpanch is found innocent his name will be dropped from the FIR.
