Critically ill patients under intensive care have special dietary needs which are different from normal admitted patients in the hospital as their recovery, pain management and other medical factors rely a lot on the kind of diet they are being fed.

These views were expressed by Dr Pankaj Soni, head, department of anesthesia, Amandeep Hospital, while addressing a one-day nutritional certificate course for critically ill patients here on Sunday.

“This area was not being given much importance, but now is emerging as new area of interest,” he said.

The course was held by the hospital in collaboration with the local chapter of Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine.

As nutrition is an important aspect in the management of critically ill patients in the ICU, the aim of this course was to enlighten the physicians, anesthesiologists and the critical care specialists, working in the different ICU settings. The course laid stress on the appropriate way to managing the nutritional aspect in the ICU.

The scientific programme to equip specialists in various fields was addressed by noted doctors from India including Dr Amit Mandal and Dr Arvind Saini from Fortis Hospital, Mohali; Dr Ravinder Reddy from Hyderabad and Dr Sadanand Kulkarni from Mumbai.

About a hundred critical care experts, surgeons, physicians, dieticians and PG students from the region attended the course.
