The police on Friday arrested a man following charges of sexual harassment levelled by his 15-year-old daughter who had lost her mother a few years ago.

Acting on the complaint of the minor victim, the police have registered a case under Sections 354-A (sexual harassment) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC against her father at E division police station. The accused has been identified as Yashpal, a resident of the Hathi Gate area, and a push cart vendor by profession.

In her complaint, the teenager has claimed that her father was sexually abusing her for the past couple of months. The police are yet to get the girl medically examined and have termed it "just an incident of teasing" by the accused. Sources said the fear of being mocked at by kin and society besides stigma attached to such instances prevented the minor from approaching the police against her father initially.

However, she gained courage after sharing her woes with her maternal grandmother. In her complaint to the police, the girl said her mother passed away in 2009 and since then she had been living with her father. She has claimed that her father was sexually assaulting her for the past two months. The victim's requests to him to stop sexually abusing her and to drop her at her grandmother's place had no effect, she claimed.

The complainant alleged that on May 7, she discussed her plight with her grandmother after which they approached the police.

Sub-inspector Harjit Kaur of E division police station said the accused has been arrested and a case has been registered against him under Sections 354-A and 506 of the IPC. "The matter is being investigated," she said.

While 2013 recorded several cases of women and minor girls being raped by their fathers, stepfathers, foster fathers, kin and confidants, the city has witnessed seven cases of rape, including sexual assault on minor girls, this year so far.
