The Amritsar police have registered a case against four inmates of the Central Jail here after four mobile phones fitted with SIM cards were recovered from their possession during checking.
The four accused have been identified as Harjit Singh, Gurdip Singh, Sukhraj Singh and Mohammad Sayad Ahmad. The accused are behind bars in different cases and the phones were in working condition.
Jail authorities told the police that they were keeping a close eye on the inmates and the phones were seized during checking of the barracks.
Notably, use of mobile phones by the jail inmates is not new. HT had recently reported that 76 mobile phones were seized from jail inmates in year 2012. Recently, a mobile phone was recovered from a Pakistani national lodged in the jail. It was learnt that he had made several calls back home in Pakistan.
The government proposal to install jammers in jails is still to be implemented. However, to check the flow of mobile phones and drugs inside the jail, the jail authorities here have installed a scanner and belongings of inmates and visitors are scanned thoroughly daily.
