Govt using police to bully Cong workers: Henry

The state government was using police to terrorise the opposition party leaders and workers, Congress leader Avtar Henry has alleged.

The former Punjab minister, in charge of the Congress affairs in Gurdaspur, addressed party workers on Thursday at a meeting in Congress Bhavan here. "Sand mafia in Punjab had made it difficult for common man to build a house and law and order had deteriorated," he said, adding: "Police and bad elements are ruling the state together virtually."

Henry accused the state government of diverting money coming from the Centre. "The benefits of the union government schemes were not reaching people of the state," said the Congress leader, appreciating the Centre's food security bill.

The meeting's aim was to mobilize workers for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee member Raman Bahl, Dinanagar legislator Aruna Chaudhary, former state minister Sushil Mahajan, and party leaders Ajay Verma, Kanwal Bakshi, Joginder Singh Chhina, Balwinder Singh Ladi, and Darshan Mahajan were present.
