Gurdaspur boy weighs record 5.6kg at birth

A woman delivered a baby boy weighing an unusual 5.6 kg at the civil hospital here on Thursday. The normal weight of a child at the time of birth is 2.5 kg to 3.5 kg.

Both mother and child are doing fine.

Twenty-five-year-old Preeti of nearby Babbehali village, wife of a labourer, gave birth to their fourth child by Caesarean operation around noon.

The couple already has two girls and a boy.

Gynaecologist Dr Ananna Babbar, who conducted the delivery, said that according to the record available, a child with the same weight was born in Surat in Gujarat in 2011.

She said that normally a child in the womb with so much weight posed threat to the life of both mother and child and often the child died at the time of birth.

She said that in India the normal weight of a child at the time of birth was 2.5 kg to 3.5 kg.
