Monsoon's scars and dimples are not yet over. The city's every street and even the link roads to this new district seem a course laid to test the commuters' driving skills.

The water logged in the potholes dried up over the past two sunny days but a cloud of dust from the broken down roads hangs in air all day during traffic. Even with two civic bodies (the improvement trust and the municipal corporation), the city has poor upkeep.

APK Road and Patel Nagar Road are under the trust and the rest maintained by the MC. All are the nightmares of two-wheeler riders, who are injured regularly in accidents. The roads are a subject of debate since being laid during the Congress' nagar council regime, and the Bharatitya Janata Party (BJP) had then promised an inquiry the day it was in power. "The BJP gained power but forgot its commitment," said local commuter Harash Arora. "Main Bazar streets and even the road before the corporation's office are bumpy but it seems the officials have shock-proof vehicles and dust-proof screens," he added.

"A lot of dust flies into in my shop every day," said Dinesh Kumar, who runs a business on Dhangu Road. "I have lost customers because they avoid taking this broken-down and dusty road. The MC can fill the potholes easily when these are small, but it seems allowing these to widen works to its profit," he added.

The slow pace of the Pathankot-Amritsar national highway project also has hurt local commuters.
