After about seven months of committing the alleged crime, the Amritsar city police have booked a man on the charges of raping a minor girl.

Strangely, the police say they took so long to register a case since they were “trying to strike compromise” between the two parties” and a “probe was being conducted”.

The victim had come over to her maternal uncle’s house at Hathi Gate to spend her vacations in July last year when the incident took place.

The accused has been identified as Sunny, a resident of Fateh Singh Colony.

A case has been registered under Section 376 of the IPC against him at the C-Division police station on the complaint of Madan Lal, girl’s father, a resident of Bagh Rama Nand.

The complainant alleged that on July 7, 2013, the accused called his daughter at about 2:30 am, took her to his house and served her tea laced with some intoxicating substance.

The victim tried to raise alarm when she regained consciousness the next morning following which the accused dropped her in front of Baba Deep Singh Gurdwara, he further informed.

“The incident occurred in July last year. But the case was registered yesterday as a probe was being conducted into the matter. Besides, attempts were being made to strike a compromise between the two parties, which failed. The case was registered after getting the girl medically examined,” said C-Division police station SHO Lakhwinder Singh.

When asked when the complainant had approached the police, the SHO did not give the exact date, saying “the aggrieved party had come to them about four-five months back”. He also did not tell the age of both the accused and the victim. “The accused is about 20 years old,” he said.

Senior lawyer VP Singh Bhatia said, “Under Section 154 of the CrPc, a case has to be registered immediately when a cognizable offence is committed. The police’s approach was wrong in this case. They should have registered the case immediately and the probe would have been conducted later.”
