Police have arrested Balwant Singh of Rayya Khurd village in Beas on charge of raping his minor neice aged six on Sunday evening.

Balwant was booked under Section 376 of the IPC at Beas police station on the complaint of Kuldeep Kaur, the child's mother.

Both the accused and his younger brother, the father of the child, are labourers and lived in a joint family, police said.

According to sources, the crime occurred around 5pm when the girl's parents had gone to the market, leaving the girl at home. The complainant said that when she returned, she saw her daughter crying and inquired what had happened. Meanwhile, the accused fled the spot on seeing her.

Police officials, however, claimed it was an "attempted rape". "The accused appears to be mentally unsound," said Amritsar rural SSP Manmohan Singh. Sources said that police had got the girl medically examined.
