The Amritsar municipal corporation (MC) goes online on Wednesday to make the collection of property tax viable, both for the officials and residents, by stashing details of the taxpayers' data online.

The move will see the corporation officials dealing with the property tax issues by way of the information technology (IT) for receiving data and payments, and also issuing electronic receipts to the consumers.

The new system is not meant to address the 'inconvenience' of the MC officials, but to ensure that they are able to receive and store the data properly for future use, which they are not doing at the moment.

The decision to go online came in the wake of the MC officials' inconvenience to accept and store data. The new system will ensure that the officials are able to receive and store the data properly for future use. The officials have been dealing with the problem of flawed or no information available under the prevalent manual system, so far.

And thus, the main objective behind going online is to remove glitches from the system - like errors committed while making property tax calculation manually - and ensuring that the records are duly kept.

Sources further said the assessments of not more than 35,000 properties were done for the property tax payment so far as against more than three lakh buildings in the city.

Confirming that the online system would be in place by Wednesday as far as the collection of property tax is concerned, municipal commissioner DPS Kharbanda said initially it would be limited to issuing electronic receipts to the tax payers.

Stating that the MC had collected property tax to the tune of Rs. 7 crore till date, Kharbanda maintained that the corporation still had a long way to go in this regard.

"From Wednesday, the MC officials will store the property tax data online and will be issuing electronic receipts against the payments of the tax,"he said.

Efforts were on to develop the system further by holding talks with various banks to make the property tax payments online, he added.

Kharbanda said as per the Punjab government's instructions, there was 10% rebate on the property tax payment till November 30. "Thereafter (December 1-31), the actual amount of the property tax will be collected, from January 1, 2014 to March 31, 2014, the property tax will be collected with 25% penalty; and thereafter, the penalty on the tax would be 50% of the actual amount,"he adds.
