The victims, Priya and Jashandeep, children of daily-wagers, were playing near the pond while their parents were away at work. Inspector Ravinder Singh, SHO of Ajnala police station, said, "They slipped and fell into the 10-foot pond.

The villagers, who were nearby, rushed to their rescue and took out the boy but were not able to retrieve the girl." The boy was taken to a nearby hospital where he died later, the SHO said. The police have started a probe under Section 174 of the CrPC.
