In the home state of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and with his eyes on the Sikh votes, BJP’s PM candidate Narendra Modi on Friday chose to play it safe by holding the maa-beta (Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul) responsible for “ruining the country and taking it to the brink of disaster”.

“We used to curse and blame Prime Minister Manmohan Singh every time but the truth is that it’s is the ma-beta who were responsible for the UPA’s misrule,” Modi said while referring to former media adviser to PM, Sanjaya Baru’s book ‘The accidental Prime Minister: The making and unmaking of Manmohan Singh’.

Addressing an election rally in this town of Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency during his daylong tour of Punjab, Modi called upon the people to “vote out the ma-beta sarkar”. In the presence of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, he called upon the people to vote for the SAD-BJP combine and ensure its victory on all 13 seats.

Describing Punjab as ‘Balidaniyon ki dharti’ and ‘ Veeron ki bhumi’ (land of the brave and the martyrs), Modi turned to pay tributes to the brave soldiers and hard working farmers of the country and sought to remind the well-attended gathering of former prime minister the late Lal Bahadur Shastri’s slogan ‘ Jai jawan, jai kisan’.

However, in the last couple of years the country’s soldiers have been beheaded and are being martyred in terrorist attacks, while ‘ kisans’ are committing suicide, he added. “The new slogan of the UPA is ‘maro jawan, maro kisan’”, he said.

Turning to the problem of drugs in Punjab that is currently being highlighted in the election campaign, Modi sought to assure all Punjabis that tackling this issue will be one of his priorities.

“I felt a great deal of pain when some mothers of Punjab came to me and narrated how their young sons died due to drugs. We cannot allow this nacro-terrorism to destroy our future generations,” Modi said.
