The Shiromani Akali Dal-Amritsar  (SAD-A) has initiated a move to bring about disgruntled Akali leaders as well as "lesser known" Akali factions on a single platform, barring Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) of the Badals.

The move to forge "panthic unity" of all these factions has already commenced with SAD (A) leaders establishing contacts with SAD (Longowal) led by former Tamil Nadu governor Surjit Singh Barnala. Moving forward, SAD (A) secretary general Jaswant Singh Mann would be in the city on Sunday to meet former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) secretary Manjit Singh Calcutta, who is not active in politics these days.

Confirming the visit, sources in SAD(A) told HT on Saturday that besides meeting Calcutta, Mann would also try to meet with Raghbir Singh Rajasansi, Darshan Singh Issapur and Gurinder Singh Shampura, local leaders of the Akali Dal 1925 led by former speaker Ravi Inder Singh. "We may meet a few other local panthic leaders, who despite being members of the SAD led by Badals, are feeling suffocated.

The aim is to bring all such individuals or groups on one platform so as to build a powerful Akali Dal parallel to the Badals' outfit," sources said.

Sources said that the meeting with the SAD-Longowal had been fruitful and something positive would emerge in the coming few months. Efforts were also on to woo PPP chief Manpreet Singh Badal, sources added.
