The Amritsar rural police have arrested one person and booked three others in two cases of rape, while the city police have booked one person on similar charges in another case. The victims, in all three cases, are married women and the accused are their acquaintances.
The police have arrested Pawan Kumar, a resident of Gharinda, after registering a case under Sections 376, 511 and 506 of the IPC against him and another person, identified as Kabul Singh, a resident of Ranian village. The case was registered at the Gharinda police station on the complaint of the victim, who alleged that the accused were known to her family and used to visit her house often.
She charged the accused with attempting to outrage her modesty while her husband was not at home. Sukhdev Singh, ASI at Gharinda police station, who is investigating the case said one person has been arrested in this connection. Efforts are being made to arrest the other accused, he added.
In another case of rape registered at Ramdas police station, which falls under the Amritsar rural police, Chanchal Sharma, a resident of Mohan Bhandarian village, and an unidentified person had been booked under Section 376 of the IPC. The case has been registered on the complaint of the victim, who said her husband, a resident of Mohan Bhandarian village, had taken a flour mill on contract from the accused.
ASI Kuldeep Singh of Ramdas police station, who is investigating the matter, said that the complainant had alleged that last year when she went to the flour mill, an unidentified accused served her tea laced with some intoxicant. She fell unconscious after having the tea and was allegedly raped and subsequently blackmailed by the unidentified accused for one year.
“She had also accused Chanchal Sharma of raping her. The victim added that as she was mortified by the incident, she went to her parents' house,” the ASI said, adding that the matter was being investigated.
In yet another case, the Amritsar city police have booked Bhaag Singh, alias Bhaaga, a resident of Guru Nanakpura, on charges of raping a woman, who was staying on rent in his house with her family. A case has been registered under Section 376 of the IPC at Chheharta police station.
Sub-inspector Shiv Nath of Chheharta police station, who is investigating the case, said efforts are being made to arrest the accused.
Meanwhile, Parvashi Mahasangh, which has come to the aid of the rape victim, has in a letter to the Amritsar police commissioner sought protection for her from the accused, who, it alleged, have threatened to harm the victim and anyone coming to her aid. Police commissioner Ram Singh said he would look into the matter. “The woman has not approached the police yet for help in this regard. If she does, we will help her,” he said.
