The Amritsar city police propose to set up beat boxes near the favorite hangouts of drug peddlers, eve teasers and other miscreants, which would be manned by woman constables, who would receive complaints concerning various crimes.

"A total of 98 beats have been established so far in different areas in the city. These work in association with local committees comprising at least 12 well-known members of the area," said SP City-1 Parampal Singh.

He added that the strength of the beat system had been trebled and additional cops deployed therewith. "The 12-member local committee would identify vulnerable points -- the favourite haunts of miscreants in their areas. Beat boxes would be installed there," he said.

The SP added that the local area committee members have also been asked to provide lists of drug peddlers and drug addicts in their areas as these would help the police nab the peddlers and send the addicts to de-addiction centres in the city.

"Besides, the police have also started crime mapping. At least 26 vulnerable points have been identified and put on the beat map," he said and added that a meeting of at least 700 cops has been called on Thursday to motivate them to fight crime in the city.
