Irked over the long power cuts and other issues concerning them, hundreds of farmers on Wednesday staged a protest dharna outside the office of chief engineer, Powercom.

Rallying under the banner of Jamhoori Kisan Sabha and Border Area Sangharsh Committee, the protesting farmers gathered near the railway station and later marched towards the dharna site.

Slamming the Punjab government, farmer leader Satnam Singh Ajnala said, "The state farmers are already reeling under tremendous debt and now the increased power bills of an additional Rs. 1,700 crore have further added to their woes."

He claimed that while there was hardly any regular power supply in villages, on the other hand the farmers were getting new electricity connections at increased rates.

Border Area Sangharsh Committee general secretary Rattan Singh Randhawa said, "The wrong policies of the Punjab government have increased the problems for the farmers. We demand that the fines imposed on farmers by the electricity department be revoked."

Randhawa also stressed that even though the government was selling power at high rates, the supply situation was very poor. The government must end this crisis soon, he demanded.
