Criticising the attack on a Sikh man and his mother in New York on August 7, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Avtar Singh Makkar on Sunday sought the central government’s intervention for ensuring safety of the Sikhs living abroad.

Criticising the incident in which a group of youngsters assaulted a Sikh man in New York while calling him ‘Osama-Bin Laden’, Makkar said, “The safety and security of the Sikhs living abroad is very important. Such hate crimes need to be controlled and tough action should be taken against the perpetrators.” Makkar also condemned the incident in New Zealand, wherein attempt was made to kill a Sikh man Davinder Singh.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Makkar said, “The Government of India must ensure that the Indian embassies abroad, especially in the US, educate and make people aware about the Sikhism and the concept of turban.”

Makkar also urged the US government to act stringently so that such repeated incidents could be curbed.
