The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) will no longer look to the Amritsar municipal corporation (MC) for removing heaps of garbage from streets and bazaars around the Golden Temple, as the gurdwara body is all set to launch its cleanliness drive from September 1.

The decision to take up the cleanliness task into its own hands was taken by SGPC executives at a meeting held at Fatehgarh Sahib on August 23. The SGPC had been unhappy with the MC for not making sincere efforts to clean the area around the shrine, which is visited by thousands of devotees each day.

Its repeated pleas to mayor Bakshi Ram Arora and other MC officials for regular lifting of the heaps of garbage along roads leading to the shrine were often not adhered to. Devotees and tourists often complained to SGPC officials of the stench emitted by the choked drains along the roads to the shrine.

Referring to the decision of the executive body, SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar announced here on Tuesday that the cleanliness drive would be set in motion from September 1.
