Takht Sri Hazur Sahib, Nanded (Maharashtra), has declared Punjab cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia ‘tankhaiya’ (guilty of religious misconduct) for distorting a shabad during an election rally held recently in Amritsar. Takht Sri Hazur Sahib is one of the five Sikh Takhts (temporal seats).

Usually, it’s the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, which issues an edict declaring someone a ‘tankhaiya’.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the priests of Takht Sri Hazur Sahib on Sunday. It was observed during the meeting that Majithia had shown disrespect to the sacred Gurbani by distorting a shabad, which had led to resentment among the Sikh community.

The meeting was headed by Takht Sri Hazur Sahib Jathedar Kulwant Singh.

This hukamnama (diktat) of declaring Majithia ‘tankhaiya’ has come amid protests by the Sikhs against the minister. During his speech at a rally, he had included the name of Arun Jaitley, BJP candidate from Amritsar, in a shabad.

Majithia had appeared before the Akal Takht and formally submitted an apology letter to Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh on Saturday. However, the Akal Takht is yet to decide on Majithia’s apology.

Despite repeated attempts, Majithia could not be contacted for comment.
