After the crushing defeat of BJP leader Arun Jaitley from Amritsar, chief parliamentary secretary and BJP’s Amritsar East MLA Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu has demanded that revenue minister Bikram Majithia, who had led Jaitley’s election campaign, should resign.
Training guns at the SAD-BJP leaders, she demanded the resignation of all who had convinced Jaitley to contest from Amritsar. Dr Sidhu, while justifying the resignation of local bodies minister Anil Joshi, said, “I think Majithia, who was leading Jaitley’s campaign, should also resign.
“There were many in the SAD-BJP who went to Delhi to convince Jaitley to contest from Amritsar. They all must resign as they failed to ensure a win for the senior leader.”
When told that Jaitley trailed by 32,000 votes in the Amritsar (East) segment that she represented, Dr Sidhu said, “In my constituency, the Akali Dal ran a parallel show. I was not invited to the rallies arranged by the Akalis. My photographs were not put on the hoardings.
Moreover, in my constituency people said that first my husband was targeted and then I was.” Dr Sidhu said, “Why should I resign? I had already informed the party in Delhi what the ground situation in Punjab was.
But there were many non-performers in the SAD-BJP who wanted a senior leader to come and win so that their weaknesses were not exposed. But people had other ideas.”
She said, “The main aim of a few people was to sideline my husband at any cost. People did question as to why a three-time MP was not given the ticket and I had no answer.”
When told that she was demanding the resignation of Majithia in whose constituency the BJP candidate led by 20,000 votes, Dr Sidhu said, “They have power.
All their works are done. Officers listen to them. Why won’t they win from their area?” She said it was Anil Joshi who had held a press conference demanding Jaitley’s candidature.
“Many from the Akali Dal also backed Joshi on this. They all must go,” she added. Reacting to this, Sarchand Singh, media adviser to Majithia, said, “In the Akali segments, we still managed a lead of 5,000 votes. The major damage was done in the BJP segments and the entire urban area.
In Dr Sidhu’s constituency, Jaitley trailed by 32,000 votes. So there is no point her raising such demands.”
