"Missing" from his constituency for almost a year now, Amritsar member of Parliament Navjot Singh Sidhu will be back within a fortnight, or so his wife has claimed.
The MP's wife, chief parliamentary secretary Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who is also legislator from Amristar East, shared this with HT here on Tuesday. "I have advised him to visit the constituency at least once a week, and tell people where things are stuck regarding his projects. The interactions will also help him know their problems," she said.
Asked when would the "once a week" visits commence, Dr Sidhu said: "Shortly, or we can say in the next 15 days. At least the people of the city should know why he was away. He should tell them what projects he took up with the Central and state governments, even if these were never started."
Asked if the poster campaign against the MP had prompted this advice, Dr Sidhu said: "No. I have been telling him this for the past some time." Reacting to the "missing MP" poster campaign by a non-government organisation (NGO) led by a former Congress councillor, the CPS said: "They should go out and put up the posters of (Prime Minister) Manmohan Singh and other union ministers. My husband went to them with many ambitious projects such heritage city status and visa at border but nothing came of it."
Asked if the MP's long absence from the city meant betraying the voters, she said: "The MP is on television for just two days a week. The other five days he is in Delhi, working for the party. Anybody who wants to meet him can go to the BJP office in Delhi. The party has made him in charge of its affairs in Delhi but I feel he should visit Amritsar also, irrespective of whether or not he has been able to secure funds."
Earlier, Dr Sidhu had posted on a social networking website that his husband was sidelined and feeling suffocated in the party, and that's why had moved away to television. She herself has been talking tough, first questioning the vision of the Punjab government by highlighting that the chief parliamentary secretaries had all perks but no work, and later terming the BJP a divided house in the state and even questioning the state party leadership.
