Punjab revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia performed ‘sewa’ (religious service) at Takht Sri Harmandir Sahib, Patna (Bihar), and Takht Sri Hazur Sahib, Nanded (Maharashtra), on Thursday.

He dusted shoes, washed utensils and listened to Gurbani at Harmandir Sahib. At Takht Hazur Sahib in Nanded, he washed utensils and listened to kirtan on the premises, Takht sources said.

Majithia had performed ‘sewa’ at Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib (Anandpur Sahib) and Takht Sri Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo (Bathinda) on Tuesday.

The senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader is undergoing “tankha” on the orders of Sikh high priests to do religious penance at the five Takhts of Sikhs after he distorted a religious hymn during a political event for Arun Jaitley, the BJP candidate from Amritsar.

Majithia was asked to carry out voluntary service at each of the five Takhts. The minister had drawn flak for the manner in which he completed the ‘tankha’ at Takht Keshgarh Sahib and Takht Damdama Sahib.

The final phase of his punishment will involve going to the Golden Temple and performing ‘akhand path’. On these three days, he will perform ‘sewa’ in the Guru Ram Dass ‘langar’ of the shrine for an hour each day besides listening to prayers for an hour on all three days.

‘TANKHA’ FROM HAZUR SAHIB
On April 28, Majithia was declared a ‘tankhaiya’ by the clergy of Takht Hazur Sahib for distorting the Gurbani. He had been directed to present himself at the Takht for hearing the tankha and had agreed to do so after the elections.

Though the Akal Takht had indicated that the decision of the Nanded Takht was no longer valid, the clergy there stood by its verdict.

“None of our representatives was present in the meeting at the Akal Takht when the tankha to Majithia was announced. So our decision still stood,” Takht deputy jathedar Jyot Inder Singh told mediapersons on phone from Nanded.

Though the Takht did not announce any additional punishment for Majithia, after completion of the ‘tankha’ assigned by the Akal Takht, he was formally ‘forgiven’ by the clergy at Nanded.

Confirming this, the minister’s media adviser Sarchand Singh told Hindustan Times over phone from Nanded, “The jathedar of the Takht has formally forgiven Majithia sahib after he completed the tankha here.”
