Following the Punjab and Haryana high court nod to the municipal solid waste management plant, the Amritsar municipal corporation on Tuesday gave 10 days' time to its consultant to float tenders for the project. The court has given the MC six months to hire a company.

The MC authorities, in a meeting spanning several hours, gave a written mandate to the Delhi-based consultants to float the tenders within 10 days. "The consultant was asking for more time, but was clearly told to do so within 10 days," said municipal commissioner DPS Kharbanda.

The project estimated to cost `72 crore would entail door-to-door collection of garbage. Despite objections and appeals by various NGOs associated with the cause of environment to shift the location from the Bhagtanwala dump to some other site, the MC proposes to set up the solid waste management plant at Bhagtanwala only.

Recently, Amritsar MP Navjot Singh Sidhu had visited the dump and even alleged that some people in the government had tried to scuttle the solid waste management project. "The unit in question would handle 650 tonnes of garbage daily, of which 600 tonnes would be from the city and around 50 tonnes from Tarn Taran, Jandiala and Patti," said mayor Bakshi Ram Arora.

He added that during the meeting, discussions were held on the cost of the project. "The written mandate for floating tenders within 10 days was handed over to the consultant after deliberating on various aspects of the project, including the cost factor," said Kharbanda.
