A 40-year-old woman died of swine flu at Vella Teja village under Fatehgarh Churrian early on Sunday morning. The deceased, Jaspal Kaur, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Amritsar for the past four days.

Confirming the swine flu as the cause of death of Jaspal Kaur, Gurdaspur civil surgeon Dr Vinod Berri said that the swab samples of the victim were found positive for H1N1 virus at PGI, Chandigarh. She was under treatment at a private hospital in Amritsar.

Dr Beri said that a team of doctors had been rushed to the victim's village to examine the family members and other relatives.

Meanwhile, swine flu scare gripped the Vella Teja village as the news of death of Jaspal Kaur reached there. The villagers even shied away away from attending the cremation of the victim, where only a few members of the deceased's family performed the last rites.

Talking to HT, Dr Tirlochan Singh, who was leading the team of doctors, said that a health camp would be organised in the village. As a precautionary measure, he said, all family members and relatives who had came in contact with the victim ever since she fell would be examined.

Moreover, the health department was also going to organise a door-to-door survey in the entire village and appropriate vaccination will be given as per required.
