A 22-year-old woman and her 11-month-old son were killed when the roof of their house collapsed in Sarain Mohalla here on Saturday morning. Three other members of the family were injured in the incident.

The victims have been identified as Bhawna and her son Nikunj. Those injured are Bhawna's husband Amit, her in-laws Pali and Tripta.

It happened around 5am when neighbours woke up to a thud. When the neighbours came out they found that the roof of Pali's house had caved in. The neighbours launched a rescue operation and pulled the five injured members of the family out of the debris.

Bhawna and Nikunj succumbed to their injuries on way to civil hospital. Pali, his wife, Tripta and son Amit are under treatment and they are stated to be out of danger.

Karam Chand, a locality resident, told HT that the roof of Pali's house was built on old pattern where wooden planks withhold the weight of the roof comprising a layer of bricks and soil. The mishap occurred after the main wooden plank gave way and whole roof came down crashing on the sleeping family members.

He said that had neighbours not started the rescue operation in time, there could have been more casualties.

Doctors at the civil hospital said that the injured were out of danger. The bodies of Bhawna and Nikunj were handed over to the kin after the post mortem.

The old city has a large number of unsafe structures which were more than five-decade-old and has the same style of roofs. The inhabitants of such houses are forced to move to safer places whenever there are heavy rains. They are also vulnerable to tremors.
