After years of wait, the district administration has finally decided to build a new administrative complex in the city. Going ahead with the Rs. 78 crore project, the district administration had already started demolishing parts of the existing structure.
Although the foundation stone for the new project is yet to be laid, the existing Civil Lines police station has already been shifted and structures near it have been demolished. The Civil Lines police station had been shifted to Circuit House.
The existing district administration complex is very old and much of its part is unsafe. It was a long-pending issue, as during rain not only parts of the existing complex tend to leak but the entire area became waterlogged.
Speaking about the project, PWD executive engineer Jasbir Singh Sodhi said: "It is a comprehensive plan that will have new structures for both the district administration officials as well as the police commissionerate."
"We have started demolishing structures, which were with the police department. The complex will cover an area of 3.85 lakh square feet. The structure of the police commissionerate will have a basement, a ground floor and four more storeys. The complex of the district administration will also have a similar structure," he added
Apart from waiting area, underground parking, record rooms, elevators will also be there for facility of people, Sodhi said.
To a question, XEN Sodhi said: "The structure where the deputy commissioner sits as of now will be preserved since it is a heritage building."
In the complex occupied by the civil administration, there will be offices of DC, ADCs, SDMs, BDPOs, public health, statistical department and other offices, added Sodhi. Similarly, the police commissionerate wing will also have offices of police commissioners, DCPs, ACPs and other officers.
The PWD official mentioned that they have started the demolition job and soon the offices will be shifted to the earmarked places.
For years, there were plans to have a modern administrative complex, as the current one was in bad shape. Announcements have been made in the past as well but nothing worked out. Finally, the process to set up new administrative complex has started moving in the right direction.
