On the complaint of the victim's father, the Sri Hargobindpur police registered a case under sections 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 342 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Gursewak Singh and an unidentified person. Gursewak was arrested on Thursday evening.

Batala senior superintendent of police (SSP) Tulsi Ram said the victim's father had lodged a complaint with the police, alleging that on January 21, she was waiting for a bus near Khokharwal village when Gursewak, a resident of Marri Pannuwan village, and his accomplice came on a motorcycle and forcibly took her to a secluded place, where Gursewak raped her.

The accused also allegedly threatened the victim, a Class-10 student, with dire consequences if she reported the incident.

The girl and her family approached the police on Wednesday evening. On the basis of the complaint, the police booked the accused and sent the victim to the civil hospital, Batala, for a medical examination.
