Members of the All Punjab Anganwadi Workers Union staged a dharna in front of the office of the deputy commissioner demanding a hike in their honorarium. The union also submitted a memorandum to the additional deputy commissioner.
President of the local unit of the union Daljit Kaur said, “Anganwadi workers are getting an honorarium of `5,000 and helpers `2,500, whereas in Haryana, workers and helpers are getting `10,000 and `5,000 respectively. So, we demand a hike in our honorarium on the Haryana pattern.”
“We are trying our best to ensure a natural and joyful environment for children at anganwaris, but the government is totally apathetic to our genuine demands,” Daljit added.
Press secretary Harjit Kaur said, “Shifting our honorarium from non-plan expenditure to plan expenditure will also cause delay in the payment every month. We shall need to struggle every month for timely payment. In May, we have been paid after two months.”
