The need of the hour was 'change' and only effective participation of youth in the country's affairs could ensure that we emerge as a strong nation, said anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare, while addressing a huge gathering at local Bhagat Singh Chowk on Sunday.
He was in town as part of his 'Jantantra Yatra' launched to gather support against the Congress-led UPA government, before Lok Sabha polls.
Anna, scheduled to arrive at 3pm, was delayed by two hours, but people still waited patiently to hear his views and get a glimpse of the man.
“We aim to change people. I have dedicated my life to this case and I will keep doing this till my end,” said Anna.
Appealing to the youth to take interest in politics and the nations' governance, he said: “There are 163 tainted MPs in Parliament and they will not allow any amendment that affects their interest to be become a law. Only active participation of youth can make tchange happen. We are fighting for a law on Jan Lokpal and the Right to Reject during polls. We hope to achieve this soon.”
He added: “Political parties are more or less the same in character. Unless the government decides to change the Centre of democracy to villages, corruption cannot be weeded out.”
Anna said that he had always loved the Punjabis for their valor and claimed that the state was a source of inspiration for him.
Former army general VK Singh was accompanying him. Singh and Anna addressed the gathering from the vehicle.
Pickpockets beaten up
While Anna was addressing the gathering on weeding corruption, pick-pocketers were busy zeroing in on their targets. However, four such miscreants were caught and were beaten up by the public, after Anna left the spot. There were some, who were seen drinking at a liquor vend near the rally site. Anna preferred to address the gathering from his vehicle to avoid any untoward incident due to the unorganized gathering.
