The district administration today verified the antecedents of 140 Pakistani Hindus, who migrated to India long ago and did not return fearing threat to their lives in the neighbouring country due to alleged atrocities, especially by Taliban, as part of the process to recommend to appropriate authorities the grant of Indian citizenship to them.

These persons, carrying Pakistani passports, could be seen queuing up in front of deputy commissioner Priyank Bharti's office, where the latter verified their documents before finalising his list for recommendation to the state home secretary.

The DC had received a letter from joint secretary (foreigners) GVV Sarma of Union home ministry through the state authorities, in which the former had asked for verification of as many as 396 Pakistani Hindus living in Punjab since 2004.

When contacted, the DC said he had verified claims of 140 Pakistani Hindus living in Jalandhar and that he would submit his report to state home department before final recommendation to the Union home ministry.
