More than 1,000 students of Apeejay School along with the teaching staff held a candle march to remember Akanksha Malhotra, a computer science teacher at the school. Malhotra had committed suicide by jumping in the Upper Bari Doab Canal at Pathankot in the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

The march started from new Jawahar Nagar Market around 5 pm and ended at the Geeta Mandir of Model Town.

The students have been shocked at the extreme step and have demanded strict punishment for the deceased’s husband Pujan Malhotra and in-laws. They said that the police should immediately arrest all the accused in this case and sought the registration of a case of murder against the accused.

Students have also launched a campaign on Facebook ‘Let’s Unite to get justice for Apeejay Akanksha Ma’am.Within hours of creation of this facebook page around 3,000 people joined the movement to express solidarity with the students.
The Pathankot police had arrested the accused husband Pujan Malhotra on Saturday and is in pursuit of other suspects.

Police have said that Akanksha drove her Honda Activa scooter from Jalandhar late Friday evening to her parents’ house in Pathankot. However, en route she decided to jump into the canal and died of drowning.

In the suicide note, the deceased had said that her husband and her-in-laws were harassing her, but the grounds of harassment were not clear yet . The police have booked four people under section 304-B (husband, in-laws are automatic suspects if wife commits suicide within seven years of marriage) of the IPC.
