Former Indian hockey captain Rajbir Kaur on Thursday joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), saying that the youth of Punjab need a fresh political pulse to flourish and come out of the menace of drug addiction.

“There is a dire need to uplift sports in Punjab which has been ignored by the government,” she said at a press conference after joining the party.

Speaking on the occasion, AAP’s Punjab in-charge Sanjay Singh said the people who flourished in their fields were now joining the AAP to change the system. He said Rajbir would play a vital role in drafting policies for the sportspersons in the state.

Rajbir, an Arjuna awardee, is the only Indian women’s hockey player who represented India in four consecutive Asian Games in 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1994.

AAP state convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur and MP Bhagwant Mann were also present on the occasion.
