Six armed goons attacked a police party at a dhaba near Balachaur in the district on Wednesday afternoon, setting free notorious gangster Dilpreet Singh who was being taken to the Hoshiarpur central jail from Ropar where he was brought for hearing in a drug case.

The incident took place at Prince Deluxe Dhaba in Railmajra village on the Nawanshahr-Chandigarh highway where the police party had stopped for lunch.

Dilpreet Singh belongs to Dhahan village in Rupnagar district. His accomplices came in two cars one of which had registration number (PB05-Z-1967) while the other had no number plate. Within few minutes of escape, the goons returned to the dhaba and took along the CCTV recording system after attacking its owner Sonu. They also snatched a weapon from a policeman.

After getting information, superintendent of police (SP investigation) HPS Parmar, Balachaur deputy superintendent of police Rajpal Singh Hundal rushed to the spot and recorded statements of the police party.

DSP Rajpal Singh Hundal said Dilpreet is facing 10 criminal cases, including attempt to murder and drug peddling. He said investigations have been launched and the accused would be arrested soon.
