In a shocking incident, armed men decamped with gold jewellery and cash after holding a child at gunpoint at Balhera village in the wee hours of Sunday.

The village is located close to Yamuna river near the Uttar Pradesh border.

Though the villagers also opened fire at the criminals, but they managed to flee. The criminals, believed to be 8 to 10 in number, forcibly entered a house belonging to one Ram kumar and attacked the family members, including two women, with sticks.

They had bullet belts tied around their waists and fired at least three shots. No one sustained bullet injury in the incident.

On hearing noise from the house, fellow villagers reached the spot but the criminals took them as hostages in the house.

Later, they held a year-old boy, Shaurya, at gunpoint and asked the family for cash and gold. Ram Kumar said the criminals took away Rs 35,000 and gold ornaments.

His daughter-in-law Babita said as family members got hold of one of criminals, they could not open fire at any of them.

In the meantime, villagers alerted others through loudspeakers at a local mosque and soon a large number of people armed with sticks and weapons rushed to rescue the family.

Sensing trouble, the criminals fled the spot.

Superintendent of police Shashank Anand who rushed to the spot told reporters that a massive combing operation had been started to nab the culprits.

Lauding the role of Babita and her husband, the SP said the couple would be honoured at the Republic Day function for showing exemplary courage in facing armed criminals.

"We will intensify police patrolling in villages and recommend villagers to get arms licences. A police post would be opened at Barsat village to ensure security in the region," he said.

There was no police breakthrough in the case till the time of filing this report.
