Five people were arrested on Tuesday as robbers after the police seized a huge amount of arms and ammunition in a gunfight.

Acting on a secret input, the police caught the five men planning to loot commission agents and farmers at grain markets across the district, senior superintendent of police Harcharan Singh Bhullar has said.

Bablu Singh, Sukhjinder Singh, Jagwant Singh, Satgur Singh and Harjinder Singh, all from Mangwal village in the outskirts of Sangrur, are the accused. "They opened fire on the police when we closed in to catch them at Ranchna village near Dhuri," said the SSP. "The police counter fired and overpowered the five men."

The police claim to have seized three 0.32-calibre pistols, two 0.315-calibre pistols, 12 live cartridges, a sports utility vehicle (SUV), and a motorcycle from the scene. Cases of robbery are registered against the men in different police stations.

The gang robbed a man of Rs 1.50 lakh in a case reported at Sangrur, while Sukhjinder and Jagwant are wanted in Rajsathan as accused in the kidnapping of a man named Nishan Singh in 2012 and demanding Rs 11 lakh as ransom, SSP Bhullar has said. The Rajasthan police had saved Nishan from the gang's captivity in Sangrur.
