The local police on Monday booked an army jawan on the charge of setting his wife afire.

The victim has been identified as Jasvir Kaur, 34, who is critical and undergoing treatment at a hospital in Chandigarh.

The police have booked victim's husband Mangat Singh, father-in-law Gurdev Singh and mother-in-law Surjit Kaur for attempt to murder on the statement of victim's brother Harvinder Singh.

Jasvir got married to Mangat, a resident of Bhasore village in the district, in 2002 and the couple has a 5-year-old child.

Investigation officer Gurdev Singh said victim's brother told police that Jasvir's in-laws had been harassing her physically and mentally for many years on the pretext of dowry. “Mangat used to thrash her severely whenever he was visiting the family,” Harvinder told the police.

He alleged that around two weeks ago, Mangat had assaulted Jasvir after she refused to meet his demand for Rs 2 lakh.

“The condition of the victim is serious as she has received around 80% burns. The police are conducting raids to nab the suspects,” the IO said.
