Armyman shoots self in Pathankot

An army jawan serving in the Mamun Cantonment area here committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle on Sunday morning.

Identified as sepoy Subhash Prasad (31) of Siwan district of Bihar, he was serving in the 68 Engineering Division and was presently deputed as a sentry in the cantonment area. The jawan had served in the Indian Army for 14 years. He is survived by two sons and a daughter.

Senior superintendent of police Rakesh Kaushal said after hearing the gunshot, Prasad’s colleagues rushed to the spot and found him lying in a pool of blood.

His family in Bihar has been informed and the body has been sent for post-mortem, the SSP said. A case has been registered at the Mamun Cantonment police station, he added.

Meanwhile, the army has ordered a court of inquiry into the case.
