In a suspected case of honour killing, the police on Friday arrested a 22-year-old woman, her father and brother on charges of killing the former’s lover, an army soldier, whose body was found at Mula Kalu village on Thursday.
The police claimed that the victim, Gurjant Singh (24), a Sikh Regiment jawan posted in Amritsar, was murdered following an affair with Prabhjit Kaur (22), a resident of Fattowal village. Gurjant had come to his native village Busowal, near Sultanpur Lodhi, on 10-day leave.
A case has been registered under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Prabhjot Kaur, her father Malkiat Singh and brother Sukhjinder Singh at the Kabirpur police station.
The police recovered the victim’s body from a cremation ground of Mula Kalu village on Thursday morning, after a pedestrian noticed a polythene bag stained with blood.
In his complaint, Mohinder Singh, the deceased’s father, told the police that his son was in a relationship with Prabhjit since they were classmates.
“On Wednesday evening, Prabhjot phoned my son and asked him to meet her at her house. Gurjant immediately left for her place on motorcycle,” he said.
He said when his son did not return till late night besides not responding to their phone calls, they started looking for him but to no avail. It has been learnt that Gurjant wanted to marry Prabhjot but her family was opposed to this on caste grounds.
Sultanpur Lodhi deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Davinder Singh said Gurjant’s body was found in a bad condition with deep cuts. “He was murdered brutally with sharp-edged and blunt weapons. After killing him, the accused dumped his body wrapped in a plastic bag in the cremation ground on Wednesday night,” he said.
The DSP said the police are interrogating the accused for further investigations. The victim’s body was handed over to his family after conducting post-mortem on it.
