Punjab Vidhan Sabha speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal on Friday said that Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had ordered the assessment of the total damage to the wheat crop due to rainfall and hailstorm in Punjab. Atwal was here to inaugurate the wheat procurement process at the grain markets of Malaud and Payal.
He said that the state government had made appropriate arrangements for the smooth procurement of wheat in the district. When some arhatiyas (commission agents) apprised him about some issues, he directed the staff to make sure that all of their grievances are redressed on time. He also directed all the procurement agencies to lift the wheat crop arriving in the grain markets on time.
Atwal also interacted with the farmers and urged them to bring only the ripened crop to the grain markets if they want proper rates. He also promised to take up the matter of increased moisture content with the chief minister.
According to Atwal, till date 6,249 metric tonnes (MT) of wheat has arrived in all the mandis of the Ludhiana district, of which 4,091 MT has already been lifted. He also assured the farmers that there would be no shortage of bardana (jute bags) for the ongoing wheat procurement process.
