The local unit of Congress on Friday threatened to gherao the Jalandhar commissionerate office if the police failed to arrest within three days former mayor Suresh Sehgal who allegedly beat up party worker Reeta Sharma at a polling booth in Rastan Mohalla on Wednesday.

City Congress president Rajinder Berry and party rural president Jagbir Singh Brar said mere registration of a case against Sehgal and two of his nephews was not sufficient enough. They said the party legal cell would take up the case and would oppose anticipatory bail of Sehgal. Reeta Shar ma said she feared for her life from Sehgal as he had threatened her at the polling booth when he beat her up and also her husband.

Meanwhile, Sehgal came heavily against police for registering a case without thorough investigation in the case.

Sehgal said the police and Reeta Shar ma maligned his image, adding that some senior Congress leaders were backing the malicious campaign against him. Sehgal (67), who was city mayor from 1997 to 2002, said Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Pawan Kumar Tinu, chief parliamentary secretary KD Bhandari and SAD leader Baljit Singh Neelamahal reached his home and assured their support to him.

ADCP-1 Dogra rejected Sehgal’s allegations as baseless, saying they were investigating the case seriously.
