The 16 linemen arrested by Fatehgarh Sahib police recently for hurting religious sentiments have been sent to judicial custody on Friday.

The accused linemen were arrested while disrupting chief minister Prakash Singh Badal's speech during a political convention during the recently concluded Shaheedi Jor mela on December 26.

Senior superintendent of police Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said the police had procured their remand till January 3 following which they were sent to judicial custody after their hearing in a local court.

Chauhan said that the accused were booked for rioting and hurting religious sentiments by indulging in slogan shouting in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib.

"The case has been registered on a genuine basis as the accused used abusive language in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib when police tried to overpower them", he clarified.

However, several trade unions and law experts termed it as a political motivated case against the accused.
The accused, who belonged to different parts of the state, were sent to Nabha jail.
