A day before its national convener Arvind Kejriwal begins his four-day visit to Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) replaced six zone coordinators who support sacked state convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur.

Seven of the 13 zone coordinators had split from the party on September 2 and taken many volunteers along, claiming their faction was the “real AAP” in Punjab and Chhotepur would take “AAP Punjab” forward. On Wednesday, new state party convener Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi appointed Fatehgarh Churian assembly seat candidate and former Shiromani Gurdrawa Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member Gurvinder Singh Shampura as Gurdaspur in-charge, replacing Amandeep Singh.

Attari candidate Jaswinder Singh Jahangir is Amritsar in-charge. He replaces Gurinder Singh Bajwa, who along with 85 volunteers had left the party on Tuesday.

Sukhdeep Singh Apra is new Jalandhar in-charge in place of Dr HS Cheema, while Darshan Singh Dhaliwal will replace JS Dhaliwal in Anandpur Sahib, Deepak Bansal replace Narinder Pal in Bathinda and Jagdeep Singh Sandhu Fattanwala replace Gurpreet Singh Sandhu in Ferozepur. No replacement for Khadoor Sahib zone coordinator Iqbal Singh Bhagowalia is named yet.

This will be Kejriwal’s first visit to the state since his party ran into this crisis. In a brief message to Punjabi NRIs from Italy (where he had gone to attend the canonisation of Mother Teresa) on Saturday, Kejriwal had said that those who had done wrong will be thrown out and those upset will be coaxed to join back.

Kejriwal will put up mainly at the house of a volunteer at Jhaande village in Ludhiana district. After he arrives in Ludhiana on Thursday by the noon Shatabdi Express, he will meet the 32 AAP candidates. Sources said he might review some candidates. He will meet the AAP volunteers on Thursday and Friday, besides teachers and doctors in Patiala on September 10.

On the last day of his tour, he will visit Dhudike village to pay tributes to freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai before releasing the farmers’ manifesto at Baghapurana near Moga. He will make night halt in Amritsar before returning to Delhi next morning.
