Villagers seemed upset with the state government and the Amritsar police. All eyes were moist as they sorely missed their fellow villager who laid down his life while saving the honour of his daughter.

The cremation took place with full police honours, as cops reversed their guns and fired in the air.

As policemen consoled the children of the ASI, Robanjit said, "My father was killed in the middle of the road. I was beaten up. I was slapped and was even shot at. I want to do the same to those who killed my father."

As Robanjit repeatedly narrated the incident, the family consoled her saying they would avenge the death.

Robanjit, Navpreet and their mother Paramjeet Kaur repeatedly fainted at the cremation ground.

SAD leaders conspicuous by absence
Except SAD MLA Gulzar Singh Ranike, no other MLA or minister of the ruling Akali Dal was present at the cremation. From the BJP, chief parliamentary secretary Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu attended the cremation and was with the family most of the time.

Almost all leaders of the urban and rural Congress were present. Later, Congress MP Partap Singh Bajwa visited the family.

From the Akali Dal, district chief Upkaar Sandhu and former MLA Veer Singh Lopoke were present.
Senior police officials, including Amritsar police commissioner Ram Singh, IG Border Range RP Mittal, DIG Paramraj Umranangal, SSP PS Virk, DCP Kaustabh Sharma and various SHOs were present.

Ready to don uniform
Following the state government's announcement to induct the ASI's daughter as an SI in Punjab Police, Robanjit is ready to don the uniform. Navpreet told the media that Robanjit would join the force.

Son wants fast-track trial
Saying the compensation by the government was secondary, Navpreet said, "My father has been murdered in broad daylight and we want a fast-track trial."

Navpreet, who came from Australia, said, "I want that the safety of our family is ensured. We are under threat from Rana and his goons."

Navpreet was not informed about the murder and was simply asked to return to India immediately. But Navpreet learnt about the incident from the media while leaving Australia.
